Help Your Dog Stay Cool This Summer With Cool Pads

When you become a dog parent, you start to understand a lot more about these lovely creatures. Although your furry friend comes well equipped to deal with different environments and the changes it may be subjected to, there is one aspect that always catches dogs off guard - the heat.

As you know, dogs come with a coat of fur - some with thin coats, others with thick woolly ones. In both cases, dogs feel a lot of discomforts when summer arrives and they have to deal with heat. Noticing that problem, experts have came up with a neat solution for our canine companions - dog cool pads

What is a Dog Cooling Mat?

A dog colling mat is a mat filled either with water or a special heat-absorbing gel. When your pet lays on the mat, their body warms up the water or gel, which drops his internal temperature slightly. There are three main types of dog cooling mats:

  • Pressure-activated cooling pad - a gel-based cooling pad that contains a chemical that absorbs the heat of the dog when it sits on it.
  • Water-filled pad - this is the most common type of dog cooling bed. The problem with this type is that it's susceptible to leakage on being chewed. It generally stays cool for 5-7 hours.
  • Phase-changing cooling pads - this type of cooling pad is generally the most expensive one. It contains a chemical called Cool Pax and can stay cool even at 58 degrees. It can also keep your dog cool for a longer period than the other two.

Besides keeping your pet cool during the summer, dog cool pads come with a couple more surprises up their sleeves.

Less Shedding During the Summer

It's normal for dogs to shed, regularly, but they generally shed a lot more during the summer or during particularly warm days. The cooling mat will keep your pet cool, which will stop them from shedding excessively all over the place. A dog brush will also help you keep your dog neat when it's shedding.

A Cleaner Dog

In order to cool off, your dog will lie down on the floor, which can be a dirty surface. A cool mat will provide a nice protective lawyer on which your dog can lie down and relax without getting dusty, dirty or feeling uncomfortable due to the dirt that is on the floor.

Acts Like an Insulating Layer

The floor is a draft place to be - your pet can catch a cold, have sore joints, have ear problems, etc. We perfectly know how uncomfortable these experiences can be, and your dog isn't exempt from it. Your dog can easily become ill when subjected to the draft at floor level and the rushing thin airflow and the cold. From a cold to rheumatism, your dog can develop the same problems as you would by lying on the cold floor for an extended period of time. The dog mat can and will insulate your dog from this airflow, keeping it a lot more comfortable, more safe and a lot more healthier as a result of that.

Prevent Dehydration

Cooling pads can also help prevent your dog from dehydrating as it won't be as hot, hence won't sweat much. This will also help your dog get better sleep as it won't be tossing and turning in hopes of getting more comfortable.

What to Consider When Buying a Cooling Mat for Your Dog

Size

Cooling pads come in different sizes to accommodate different dogs, so choose yours based on your dog's size. If you choose one that is small, your dog won't cool down enough. One that is too big may also be less efficient. Also, consider where you are going to put it. Does it need to fit inside a dog crate or kennel? With that said, check your dimensions first to make sure the mat fits.

Portability

Note that some water-filled cooling mats can become heavy and difficult to more. So consider if you want a pat to sit in just one place or do you want to be able to move it around easily. In the second case, a lightweight pat can fold away for easy storage or travel if you need it.

Easy to Use

This is an important feature to consider if you plan on travelling with your cooling mat and will need to set up and dismantle it regularly.

Easy to Clean and Maintain

Dog pads can pick up a lot of hair, dirt and dust, so try to choose one that is easy to clean. Look for models that can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

Durability

Where will your dog be using the pad? If you plan using the pat outside, choose one that is durable and will be able to withstand the elements. Also, keep in mind that dogs can be rough with their stuff. They tend to scratch, chew, and bite things. Choosing a pad made from a sturdy material will ensure it lasts longer.

Non-Toxic

Make sure the pad you choose is made from non-toxic materials. Nylon holds up well to wear and tear and is breathable. Avoid mats made with plastic, latex, rubber or foam as they tend to trap moisture.
