Variable Frequency Drive VS Soft Starter

Overview

A large inrush current is usually required when an AC motor is accelerated to full speed while using a full voltage connection. In addition, the torque of the AC motor is pretty much uncontrolled and may shock the equipment that is connected, hence causing damage. Viable frequency drives and soft starters are equipment designed to reduce limit torque and inrush currents, protecting expensive equipment and extending the life of the motor as well as coupling devices.

Whether you need to buy a soft starter or a variable frequency driver will mostly depend on the type of your application. Also on your mechanical system requirements and cost.
