What Do You Need to Start Your Own Urban Garden

People are becoming highly concerned about the quality of food they are consuming and are opting to grow their own food. This explains the news methods and tips available to help people to grow their own produce. Even those with no experience in gardening are becoming confident to take up this hobby and what is most surprising is that a great number of them are living in highly populated urban areas.

So, if you live in a concrete jungle, you too can grow a garden. Your effort will be reward with healthy, delicious produce you have grown yourself. Let's take a look at what you will need in case you decide to enter the world of the organic urban garden.

Garden Containers
Some like to say that basically anything that can hold soil can be a suitable growing container for balcony gardens, but I don't agree with that. Adequate garden containers need to offer plenty of space for roots to grow and need to have roles to allow proper drainage. A plastic, white planter with self-watering mechanism is my recommendation as the best urban garden container.

Plastic is a durable material that withstands the elements well and the white colour is the easiest to combine with every colour scheme. The self-watering mechanism takes care of your plants' need for water and has a system that shows you just how much water is left in the reservoir, so you don't have to think about refilling all the time. Plastic, white planters are suitable for growing both fruits and vegetables and you can use them to grow flowers as well.

Soil
You should use a high-quality potting mix to fill your containers. When shopping for potting mix, choose a mix that is soft, maintain moisture and offer plant roots with the right balance of nutrition, moisture, air, and anchorage. When you select a mix that is too dense or too wet, it may result in your plants to become stunted or even die.

Seeds
Before you decide which seeds to plant it is essential to take a look at your balcony's layout carefully. Know that vegetables usually need lots of sun to grow large and plentiful. Therefore, plan around this in your urban garden to make sure the seed you choose will receive the right amount of sun it needs to grow. When purchasing seeds, pay close attention to what each plant needs and make sure it matches the condition of your urban garden space.

Fertilize
When gardening in very small spaces such as planters, you need to put attention to your soil nutritional needs. That is because plants in containers deplete the nutrients at a quicker rate than large-scale gardening. So, make sure you add organic compost, top-dress soil and spray with compost tea often.
